This procedure is also called a lymphadenectomy. For patients with nonseminoma, removal of the lymph nodes can help stop the spread of the disease. Cancer cells in the lymph nodes of patients with seminoma can be treated with radiation.
Serum tumor marker test: A procedure in which a blood sample is tested to measure amounts of certain substances, such as CA 19-9, and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), that are released into the blood by organs, tissues, or tumor cells in the body. Certain substances are associated with certain types of cancer when they are found in increased levels in the blood. They are called tumor markers. - Alfa-fetoprotein (AFP)
